The Douglas College Newsletter ml New Westminster Campus, David Lam Campus IN Douglas College Expanding degree options at vougias College Students seeking advanced training in business and child and youth care can now find degree-level education at Douglas College. The Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care (BA CYC) and the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) were officially approved by the Ministry of Advanced Education in April. Both programs offer students a focused education that specializes on the training needs, practical application and certifications required in each sector. These real-world skills and industry credentials will enable students to reach beyond entry-level career positions. ‘The new BA CYC is the second Douglas College degree in the Faculty of Child, Family and Community Studies, joining Therapeutic Recreation. The program trains students to deal with some of society's biggest social issues such as abuse, neglect, addiction, family breakdown or behavioural and learning difficulties. Practicum experiences in each year of study help students apply the theory and skills taught in the classroom. ‘The degree builds on the existing diploma program and offers options to specialize in youth justice or child welfare. “The Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care program will equip our students to find advanced-level positions with a clear understanding of the challenges children and youth face,” says program coordinator Ray Chapman. Building on the success of business diploma programs, the BBA is the first degree in the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration. It offers students the chance to enter the program after their diploma studies are complete or bridge into the program from other disciplines. Students can specialize in either Accounting or Financial Services and Administration. ‘The program not only trains students to succeed in the world of business, but also prepares them to obtain professional certifications and credentials. “It’s very exciting for our business faculty to earn approval for this degree. Our commitment to career-focused training has already resulted in many business-sector employers seeking out our Child and Youth Care students can now increase career options through the new Bachelor of Child and Youth Care program. diploma-level grads,” says business faculty dean, Rosilyn Coulson. ‘The BA CYC and the BBA join Douglas College’s other bachelor’s degree offerings in nursing, psychiatric nursing, therapeutic recreation and physical education and coaching. Sports stars celebrated ‘The Royals Athletic Banquet, held on March 29, celebrated the accomplishments, dedication and commitment made by Douglas College athletes, coaches and support staff. The Coach of the Year was awarded to badminton Head Coach, Al Mawani. The Burnaby Sports Hall of Famer made Canadian College Athletic Association (CCAA) National Badminton history this year as he led the Douglas College Royals badminton team to the first- ever five-event sweep in the 2007 National Badminton Championships. Female Athlete of the Year went to badminton champion Lindsay Thomson. She was also awarded the CCAA Athlete Supremacy Award which recognized her as the top athlete (either Male or Female) across every sport in the country. Andrew Sturgeon and Alvin Lau were both recipients of the Douglas College Male Athlete of the Year award. Sturgeon was an integral part of the men’s basketball success and led the Royals in scoring and rebounding. He was also named as the BCCAA Male Athlete of the Year and CCAA All-Canadian. Lau shared the back-to-back national mixed doubles badminton title with Charmagne Yeung in 2006 and 2007. Lau was also a member of the BC Winter Games Badminton team which won gold at the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse. The recipients for the Andy and Helen Andrews Academic Athletes of the Year were James Anderson, men’s basketball, who won the Male Student Athlete award for the second year and Lauren Johnston, women’s volleyball, who took home the Female Student Athlete award. ‘The 2006-2007 season was one of the most successful years in Douglas College athletics history as athletes captured five CCAA National Championships, five BCCAA Provincial Championships, four CCAA All-Canadians and a CCAA Athlete Supremacy Award.
