Rowe came on board to start up the HORM project and his first intake was 30 students. HORM grew quickly to an intake of 80 students and it typically retains 65 through the second year. Many grads are now working with major hotel and restaurant companies in management positions. Although challenges are always part of the mix, the future looks bright with the 2010 games, the growth in hospitality product and demand for leadership talent. Now under Chair Mark Elliot, the HORM strategic plan consists of looking for innovative partnerships to grow intakes and to look at a potential January intake stream in the near future. FLOWing with success While some people were enjoying the final lazy hazy days of summer, others were working hard to put on a big welcome for new and returning students. The Fully Loaded Orientation Week (FLOW) held on August 29-31 with its companion Fun Week from September 5-7 was an informative and fun-filled start to the academic semester. “In the first three days at both campuses there were over 600 students participating in workshops, tours, and library orientations. During Fun Week it’s estimated that over 1400 students participated each day at the New Westminster campus and over 600 each day at the David Lam campus. There were three tuition winners for each Campus—three, six, and nine credit prizes. We received lots of great feedback and had many volunteers,” says Kyle Baillie, to raise $30,000 with your help. We encourage you to invite your friends and neighbors to attend on Friday, Nov. 17 from 7 to 9:30pm when they will be treated to wine and Scotch tastings, gourmet appetizers prepared by the chef of SFU’s Diamond Club and served by our HORM students. Exciting rafHes and draws and a live auction round out the evening. Tickets are $55 each and can be ordered by calling Sarah Jenkins at 777-6176 Manager of the Office for New Students. Helping make the event a success was coordinator Laurie May. “Laurie poured endless hours, talents, enthusiasm and inspiration into ensuring that Douglas College put our best foot forward,” says Registrar Trish Angus. Along with a host of student volunteers that included, Jacqueline Smith, Alan Yang and Will Zadorozny, everyone who participated made the six days a roaring success. “Td like to say how enjoyable it was to work on this project. ‘The support from everyone was overwhelming and greatly appreciated! My students always brought a smile along with them to their workday. We should all take lessons from them; it really helped me keep my spirits up whenever I was tired or there were problems to deal with,” says May.
