Lower Mainland employers will be showcasing their organization's opportunities and plans for the future. Representatives will be on site to discuss their companies’ employment requirements and training programs available for potential employees. As well, some of the employers will be accepting resumes for current and future employment opportunities. Some of the organizations scheduled to attend include Douglas College, City of Burnaby, AirTransat, Club Intrawest, PNE, Self-Help Resource Association, Bootlegger, Adecco, Canadian Forces, Earl’s, ICBC and Esquires Irene & Co Hairstudio. Youth will have the opportunity to interact with these employers, gaining valuable knowledge about different career avenues and what local area employers are looking for. Reminder from Statistics Canada The Census of Population, which will be conducted by Statistics Canada in May of 2001, has an impact on everyone who lives in British Columbia. For every British Columbian not counted in the Census, the province loses $1,000 per person annually in federal transfer payments. Census information also supports more than 80 provincial and federal legislative measures, including Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan, Child Tax Benefits and Old Age Security. Please remember to mail in your completed census form by May 15. Talk it up Elva Reid, retired ECE faculty member, would like to invite anyone over 55 to TALK, Third Age Learning at Kwantlen. TALK offers courses on topics such as Livingroom Learning: Banned Books, Philosopy is Fun and Comparative Religion, as well as a series of Philosopher's Cafes. Janice Penner and Penny Totsui (from our sister institution, Kyoto University of Foreign Studies), facilitated a workshop on “Creating The Vancouver Film School was just one of many exhibitors at the 12th Annual Career Fair held March 8 by the Alumni Association. Approximately five senior secondary schools attended throughout the day, making the concourse a very busy place. The Alumni Association would like to thank everyone who participated in the Career Fair and made it a success. Creativity reaps reward Congratulations to Carla Elm of the Learning Centre for winning the Maurice Hodgson Memorial Award for Creative Writing, worth $1000. This award was established last year by the late Maurice Hodgson’s family, and is presented every year at the Pearls anthology book launch to a Creative Writing student who has exhibited achievement and shows promise. Maurice Hodgson, a leading member of the Creative Writing Department for many years, is fondly remy mbered every Spring through this award presentation.
