QUOTE of the DAY We have the chance to look closely at program development, curriculum development, and at new initiatives. ” Mia Gordon Dean of Human Resources and College Development -INside June 25,1993 The Douglas College Newsletter It’s a go! | We've got it on paper. Now, let’s build it Planning money for Douglas College’s Pinetree Way campus was released Tuesday in Victoria by the Ministry of Advanced Education, Training and Technology. Space planning begins immediately for the construction of the 2,000 FTE (Full Time Equivalent) facility, located on a site near the Coquitlam Town Centre. Phase e will open in 1996 with operational ding for 750 FTEs. There are two sides to the planning process: program development, and the facility itself. Mia Gordon, Dean of Human Resources and College Development, says that deciding on the program mix is at the top of the planning agenda. "The initial plan is for 2,000 FTEs, but we'll be adding FTEs in chunks after 1996, so we need to decide how that will happen. " The process will be complete by the end of summer, and Gordon stresses the need for College departments to move quickly. "We need to meet tight planning dead- lines. If we don’t, we may lose the priority from Victoria in terms of dollars for capital projects. Our aim is to keep people very well 6. We welcome suggestions for Jformation flow, because I’m convinced that if they have the information, the departments can meet the challenge." The 1991 President’s Commission, last year’s Sigma Report, and the College's ongoing Environmental Task Force have all worked to identify possible program areas, some of which could be integrated across the applied and academic areas, Gordon says. "We want space programming completed by September 30 at the latest," says Jim Doerr, Dean of Community Programs & Services. "A major program area that we're looking at is environmental studies. Another is fine arts or visual arts programming, but we don’t yet know how the new programs will look." On the facilities side, the project manage- ment process begins now. That includes hiring for project managers, space pro- grammers and architects, and general development of the site. "We want space programming completed by September 30 at the latest,” says Jim Doerr, Dean of Community Programs & Services. "Eighty percent of working drawings need to be done for the end of February 1994." In a recent development, discussions between Douglas College, the Municipal- ity of Coquitlam, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Advanced Education have led to a shared-cost pro- posal that would locate a high school next to the new campus. Doerr makes clear that it would not be the sort of arrangement Douglas College has at the Thomas Haney Centre in Maple Ridge. The buildings may share some facilities, but they will be separate units. Also, says Doerr, it’s still too early for definite information on positions for College staff and faculty at the new campus, but he says that should become more clear when programs and services are finalized. a $s douglas college If you would like more information about the Pinetree Way campus in Coquitlam, see your department head, who will receive updates monthly, or call Jim Doerr at 5383.
