IN MEMORY Does College lost a valued teacher and colleague with the death of Ken McGlinchey on October 22, 1987. Ken was born in St. Stephan, New Brunswick in 1944, and spent the first part of his life in the Maritimes. He received his B.A. and M.A. in English from Dalhousie University, and was en- rolled in the Ph.D program at the University of New Brunswick when he was offered a teaching position with the English & Com- munications Department at Douglas College in 1970. Ken quickly adapted to life on the West Coast - more fully than most, in fact, as he was an avid sailor and lived aboard his own boat for some time. His warmth and good humour earned Ken many close friends throughout the College and community. As an English instructor, Ken was regarded by his colleagues and students as a first-rate, natural teacher, and he was instrumental in developing the Canadian Literature and Women’s Studies courses for the College. All who knew Ken admired him greatly for his remarkable spirit, which was undiminished even in the face of cancer and its accompanying treatments. Ken is survived by his wife, Nancy; by his two sons, Mark and Peter; and by his parents, grandmother, and sister. ATHLETICS & INTRAMURALS BASKETBALL The "one and only" Outlaw Classic men’s basketball tourna- ment took place at Douglas College over the week-end (Oc- tober 30-31) with the final game played between the Outlaws* and Fraser Valley College Cascades. A new home for our trophies gives Gerry Della- Mattia a lot more space in his office and a terrific opportunity for everyone to observe the excel- lence of Douglas College athletic teams. THE BASELINE The October issue of The Baseline published by Basketball B.C. salutes BC’s under 19 team as the 1987 Canadian Junior Na- tional Champions. Members of this team include: Steve Beauchamp as assistant coach, present D.C. students Phil Taply, Mark Osachoff and Glen Cote. Now you know what our coaches and athletes do during the sum- mer months! WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The women’s basketball team will be sponsoring the newest Warren Miller Ski Movie which will be shown in the Performance Theatre December 1st at 6 and 8 p-m. Tickets are $4.00 students and $6.00 general admission with all proceeds going toward the women’s basketball program. Tickets will be available soon from all members of the women’s team and Betty Lou Hayes, Room 1338. INTRAMURALS Intramural curling takes place every Monday (4:30 - 6:30 p.m) at the Royal City Curling Club and new members are always wel- come. Two staff and faculty teams compete, skipped by Mar- garet Zucht and Marsh Price. Four student teams have registered and they appear to be pretty good curlers. Instruction is available each week (4:30 - 5:00 p.m.) by two of last year’s team members. This is a terrific oppor- tunity to learn to curl. Sn la a ii ee sie
