ER open for business Employee Relations at the David Lam Campus will have the following schedule during the Fall semester: September 6, 13, 19, 26; October 4 (closed), CE Travel and Tourism Program receives endorsement The College's Travel and Tourism Certificate Program, offered through Commerce and Business Continuing Education, recently achieved the national standard set by ACCESS and has qualified for Level 1 endorsement. “ACCESS was formed by the Association of Canadian Travel Agents (ACTA) and the Canadian Institute Of Travel Counsellors (CITC) to develop national educational standards and a certification program,” says Community Programmer Brenda Welock. “The endorsement procedure is quite rigorous, entailing an evaluation of faculty credentials, the curriculum being taught, number of teaching hours, subject material and the ability of graduates to pass the ACCESS entry examination.” Students who successfully complete the Douglas College Travel and Tourism Certificate Program are granted 12 credits towards the CTC (Certified Travel Counsellor) professional designation as well as receiving a Continuing Education Certificate. Graduates of endorsed programs can prove to employers that they have met the recognized national standards. Respectful community brochures available Violence, sexual harassment, discrimination, stalking — none of these behaviours are welcome at Douglas College, a fact that is being driven home through brochures being distributed at all three Campuses. The brochure provides the standards of conduct at Douglas College, definitions of sexual harassment, personal discrimination and stalking and how to deal with these situations, the College’s commitment to students and employees and support services available. CE moves Laura McDonald of Continuing Education reports that she has temporarily moved into Brenda Jack’s position while Brenda has been seconded to do the Banner Conversion for Continuing Education. Maureen Clarke is temporarily in Laura’s PNUR position. Maureen was a CE Registration Clerk, so Kathy Hodge is an auxiliary in her position. All this chaos is set to end January 18, 2002. Also, Laura and Kristen Conboy have banded together and are now playing women’s ice hockey at Planet Ice. Their team is called the “Xtreme Team” and they'd like everyone to know that they'll be pestering all of their colleagues in a few months for donations fora raffle that they’re holding to raise funds for the team. Dave earns gold Dave Dalcanale, Register’s Office employee and coach of the College’s men’s volleyball team, had an interesting summer job this year. “I was an Assistant Coach with the Mens BC Volleyball Canada Summer Games team,” says Dave. “The team won the Gold Medal by defeating Alberta in the final 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-14). The team went undefeated in the tournament before defeating Ontario in the semi’s 3-1 and then Alberta.” The ELF grows up The Electronic Library Facility (ELF) in the Library at the David Lam Campus will soon have a full complement of computers for library instructional sessions and student usage. Myrna Popove of the Douglas College Foundation confirms that $50,000 is now available to complete the equipment purchases needed for the facility. The David Lam Campus ELF was expanded late in 2000 to accommodate at least 30 students but funds were still needed to equip the room to its capacity. Plans are now underway to complete the facility. Angel published Philosophy instructor Leonard Angel has just had an article published in the British Journal for the Philosophy of Science. Entitled “A Physical Model of Zeno’s Dichotomy Paradox,” the article links ancient paradoxes with modern physics. Humphrey published Jan Humphrey (CFCS) has just published the 3rd Edition of her textbook So You Want To Be An Interpreter? This is the number-one selling textbook in Sign Language Interpreting programs in North America, England and Italy. The new version is expanded from 425 to 604 pages! Staff Moves Kathe Cowan in the Registrar's Office moves from auxiliary in Admissions to regular in CE Registration, replacing Lorraine Falardeau who moves into CE Registration replacing Lillian Bullach who is retiring. In Science & Technology, Judy Bicep moves into the regular position of Math Advisor at the New Westminster Campus, replacing Randy Morrison who has resigned. In Systems and Computing, Kim Reeves and Ricky Chew move from Computer Technicians to Network Technician/Systems Administration.
