ae ACCLAIMED GUITARIST RETURNS TO B.C. cclaimed guitarist Philip Dent-Candelaria returns to British Columbia, one year after his tour of Western Canada brought him standing ovations and sold-out concerts. The talented classical artist will per- form a free public concert at Douglas College on Thursday, March 3] at noon. Early in life Candelaria studied piano, but soon fell in love with the guitar when he and his family spent a year living in Spain. Before the age of 25, he was the winner of several music prizes, in- cluding two competitions for young Canadian musicians.. By now, he has amassed more than a dozen awards for performance. He has received the Professional Study Award, B.C. Cultural Fund's highest award to an in- dividual artist. After studying music history at UBC and guitar performance at John Hopkins, he moved to On- tario, where he teaches guitar at Cambrian College in Sudbury. His performances have been well received by the critics, who have called him “a musician of uncommon taste and facility" and praised his “irresistible natural- ness." STUDENT VENTURE LOAN PROGRAM 1988 he Student Venture Loan Program offers interest-free loans to students who wish to plan and operate their own small businesses during the summer months. The Student Venture Loan Program provides business start- up money to a maximum of $2,000 per individual business venture and $3,000 per partner- ship venture. The loan is interest-free from April 1, 1988 until the repayment deadline of September 30, 1988. Connie Hamre GRANT MacEWAN COLLEGE HOSTS INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS CONFERENCE From June 19 - 21, Grant Mac- Ewan Community College in Edmonton is hosting its first inter- national business conference - "Making Global Connections". Co-sponsors include Alberta Economic Development and Trade, The Bank of British Colum- bia - Division of Hongkong Bank of Canada, Canadian External Af- fairs and Japan Airlines. "Making Global Connections” will be held at the Ramada Renaissance Hotel in downtown Edmonton and begins witha wine and cheese reception at 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 19. On the 21st the conference winds up with a gala international recep- tion at the hotel. The conference promises to be an exciting one with a line up of renowned international speakers presenting over 45 forums, semi- nars and workshops.
