CHORUS AND GUITARS TEAM UP [T* Douglas College Chorus and the Douglas College Guitar arts combine their talents on Friday, February 19, in a lively program that is sure to please fans of both genres. It’s a natural combination, says Tatsuo Hoshina, director of the chorus. "Our chorus is made up of singing students, guitar players and pianists from the music department, and that's why we are having a guitar en- semble as well. It’s an ensemble of students who are taking guitar lessons at the college. Michael Strutt is the director." A heterogeneous performance is planned, including 16th cen- tury chansons, a Bach canon and a work by Brahms. Seldom- heard Russian composer Cesar Cui will also be represented, along with contemporary com- poser Ernst Krenek. Rounding off the evening, the chorus will sing several lighter works: a Somerset folk melody, some Negro spirituals, an unusual ar- rangement of "Oh, Dear, What can the Matter Be?" and the Carols Jobim bossa nova, "Cor- covado" (Quiet Nights). ment of UBC. LOVE THROUGH THE AGES oO: Thursday, February 18, the Noon at New West Series continues its custom of delivering "something for everyone" in free public concerts highlighting a wide range of musical styles and time periods. Tenor soloist Peter Spira and piano accompanist Henry Waack perform the works of composers from John Dowland to Kurt Weill in a concert entitled "Four Centuries of Love.” Spira and Waack have put together a diverse program that covers the love songs of several musical periods from very early to contemporary. As well as the works by Dowland and Weill, they will perform five songs by Maurice Ravel, operatic pieces by Donizetti and Celia and an aria from the opera Albert Herring by Benjamin Britten. The concert will also be the premiere performance of three songs by contemporary Canadian composer Stephen Chatman, a graduate of the music evar Waack, organizer of the Noon at New West series, says "The theme of the concert was meant as a kind of tribute to Valentine's Day." Peter Spira started his career as a music student at Douglas Col- lege and went on to study at UBC. He sings with the Van- couver Chamber Singers, who have toured China and per- formed at the recent Olympic celebrations in Calgary. Henry Waack is convenor of music here at Douglas College and often per- forms in musicals and as an accompanist for vocalists.
