COQUITLAM THIS WEEK Coquitiam Crazy for Corporate Coffee! By Brady Ehler, Coquitlam Rep. Ah! I love coffee. In fact, I’m drinking a cup right now and it’s delicious. There is nothing like a nice cup or seven of steaming-hot coffee to wake you up in the morn- ing, warm you up on a snowy December day, and keep you awake until four in the morning to write essays and study for exams. I think people who live in Coquitlam have a special craving for coffee, especially corporate coffee. Most people in the Lower Mainland have heard about the two downtown Starbucks that are positioned strategically across the street from each other at the intersection of Robson and Thurlow, but slightly less known is the Coquitlam Starbucks on Pinetree and Lougheed, and the other Coquitlam Starbucks on Pinetree and Lougheed. The first Starbucks in question is what I like to refer to as “the cultural epicenter of downtown Coquitlam.” It’s sad but true. At any given point in the day, it can be hard to secure a seat, even though most days the coffee shop in question is open until 1am in the morning. Have no fear though, because if Lougheed/Pinetree Starbucks No. 1 is full, you can always go to Lougheed/Pinetree Starbucks No. 2, which is located inside of the Chapters bookstore, on the opposite side of the plaza. This seems like a perfectly reasonable arrangement to me, I mean suppose, if after having a nice tall latte at Starbucks No. 1, you decide to go book shopping, and after reading magazines for half an hour you develop a sudden craving for a grande mocha cappuccino. Should you have to make the three-minute journey back across the parking lot? I say no! The good folks at Starbucks realize this, and thus we have Lougheed/Pinetree Starbucks No. 2. I know what you’re thinking; you’re thinking, what if, after magazine shopping I decide to get some groceries at the nearby Save on Foods, and am suddenly struck by an overwhelming urge for a triple espresso? Well, brothers and sisters, our friends at Starbucks have you covered. You could make the epic two-block journey to Coquitlam Centre Mall, or else resort to drinking coffee at McBean’s, The Bagel Street Café, or Blenz. But should you have to? Hell no! Once again, Starbucks has you covered; simply walk to the north end of the mall, and your Starbucks cravings will be properly satiated. God bless Starbucks, I mean it man. "If, by some strange fluke, you are in the downtown Coquitlam area and are one of the five people that prefer to go to privately owned coffee shops, I recommend you visit The Mayan Art Café, beside the Michaels on Lougheed and Westwood. It has real Mayan art, real South American staff, and real good coffee. Café Addictions on Westwood is a good one too. If you’re headed towards the college, then you might want to check out The Cornerstone Café on Pinetree, next to the public library. If The Cornerstone Café isn’t your style, you can always grab your java inside the college at Red Berries Coffee and just chill in the concourse.
