-SL EXCHANGE

They crossed an ocean to study English in New Westminster and returned fo their
native Japan with enhanced language skills and a greater understanding of
Canada.

 

 

Junko Ohta and Masao Ito travelled to the Royal City last September under an edu-
cational exchange program sponsored by Douglas College. The two Japanese ex-
change students left Canada recently after completing an intensive four-month En-
glish as a Second Langauge program at the College.

“| was very lucky to have the chance to study in Canada,” said Ohta, who teaches
Japanese as a Second Language fo foreign students, diplomats, and businessmen
at Japan’s Kobe YMCA College. “I really enjoyed the experience; it was very helpful.
| feel more comfortable using English now.” said the 39-year-old senior language
