Brady Bunch's loss, the College's gain. After just missing the role of 70's TV dad Mike Brady, Gordon Gilgan settled for 25 years of service with Douglas College. Congratulations to our Dean of Academics who is now the new President of Grande Prairie Regional College. After 25 years at Douglas College, Gordon Gilgan is Alberta-bound. Gilgan, who had been Douglas College’s Dean of the Academic Division since 1981, has been hired as the President of Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC). GPRC has a student population of 1,600 FTE and is located five hours northwest of Edmonton. The institution boasts a similar profile to Douglas College, mixing university transfer and career programs. Gilgan says he looks forward to leading an institution into “the opportunities available in the 21st century” but adds he must also address tough budgetary and enrolment issues. “Tt will be a new challenge for me to be in such a senior position and to provide leadership at a time of difficulties that all institutions are anticipating as governments in every province tighten up their budgets,” Gordon Gilgan named Grande Prairie President says Gilgan, who begins his new duties on September 18. ‘Declining enrolments in Alberta for the last couple of years, possibly as a result of tuition rates, is another issue that will have to be addressed.” The dean who kept a piece of driftwood emblazoned with “Gilgan’s Island” in his office joined Douglas College as a Biology Instructor in 1970. He served as President of the Faculty Association from 1976 to 1978 and became Vice-Principal of the Surrey Campus from 1978 to 1981, in the days before the advent of Kwantlen College. Gilgan became Dean of the Academic Division in 1981. “1 ll remember Douglas College fondly,” says Gilgan. “I have a lot of good friends here.” Everyone is invited to say good-bye to Gordon at a get together on September 7 at 4:30pm in the Douglas Room (level one cafeteria). | New building around the corner Architectural drawings are now complete for the Douglas College Student Society Building and the project could be opened to tender for construction by November, says Facilities Services Director Terry Leonard. The new three-storey building will be built on the New Westminster campus, on the open space adjacent to the library on 7th Street. Plans feature a total floor area of approximately 1,600 square meters. The building will include a deli area which can be used for social activities, Student Society business and executive offices, games room, word processing area and conference room. Initial estimates of construction cost for the building, excluding furniture and equipment, is about $2.3 million. The project is financed by a Student Building levy collected by Douglas College on behalf of the Student Society.
