FROM THE WOMEN'S CENTRE: MYTHS SURROUNDING RAPE Myth: Rape is a sex crime. Fact: Rape is a crime of violence and power. Myth: Women secretly want rape. Fact; Women do not want to be raped. Rape is a traumatic, painful and fearful experience. Myth: "She asked for it." Fact: This is the classic way that the burden of blame is shifted from the rapist to the victim. Women _are entitled to assume they will not be attacked and that they can walk safely without threat of at- tack. Myth: Rape is an involuntary act conmmit- ted by a sexcrazed stranger in a dark alley. Fact: The majority of rapes are premed- itated acts of aggression. Most are committed by someone the victim knows and trusts to some degree. The majority of rapes happen in either the victims's or rapist's home, with the next most common lo- cation being the rapist's car. Myth: Rape victims are young. Fact: Victims range from the very young to the very old. Myth Fact Rape does not exist in marriage, It does, but rape within marriage is not identified as a crime by the Criminal Code of Canada. es se
