The challenge lies not in embracing this idea, but in anticipating, adapting to and generating fresh ideas that exploit change. Douglas College’s Prior Learning and Recognition Service (PLAR) is growing. Based on the successful three-year prototype in the Faculty of Child, Family and Community Studies, PLAR received funding this year from the College through Strategic Development to expand the service to college-wide operations. Carol Ebner, PLAR Coordinator/Advisor, explains that “significant changes have occurred, such as the inclusion of PLAR in 16 programs. Our mandate for change is driven by the strategic directions approved by the College Board.” Ebner also stresses the need for a shared commitment through discussion and collaborative decision-making. “Our clear goal is to (Clockwise from top) Tim Manning, Royal Bank Vice President of Business Banking, Susan Witter, President, Douglas College, Robin Ciceri, Assistant Deputy Minister of Advanced Education, Training and Technology and Myrna Popove, Executive Director, Douglas College Foundation try out the new Electronic Library Facility (ELF) at the Open House October 14. We need to involve students, college personnel, and our communities to make all decisions public for this to work.” Based on the model of an open college network, the service coordinates and supports changes in learning and assessment practices at the College. The service will assess candidates, support College personnel, work with other educational agencies to assess clients, and conduct field research on PLAR issues. The PLAR service team wants to include you in their meetings and add your thoughts and ideas to the decision making process. For more information, call 527-5128. A collaborative network listserv is also being set up to open up dialogue and discussion. Team Canada rolls over competition Led by Head Coach and College instructor Tim Frick, Team Canada women’s wheelchair basketball team handed the BC Breakers a resounding 38-13 defeat in their final exhibition game October 15 before leaving for the Gold Cup world championships in Australia. Held every four years, the Gold Cup in the pinnacle of world wheelchair basketball events. The series of exhibition games held at Douglas College pitted the team against strong men’s and women’s teams, improving their play and resolve. “We may be the defending world champions, but we’ve got to keep improving if we are to stay on top, and the only way to do that is to play against stronger teams,” says Frick. This strategy seems to work. As Head Coach since 1990, Frick has led the team on an incredible winning streak. Their international record stands at 31 straight — victories since winning the bronze medal at the 1990 Gold Cup. The team has gold medals and undefeated strings at the 1991 Stoke-Mandeville Games, the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics, the 1994 Gold Cup, the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics and the 1998 America’s Qualifying tournament.
