laypeople offered at free lectures

eople who live in cities often believe that clearcut logging and pulp mill
Peiuent are two of the province’s major environmental concerns, but urban
areas like the Lower Mainland and Greater Victoria are responsible for many of
B.C.’s environmental problems.

&S "A lot of our environmental problems come from cities. It’s interesting to
compare the two areas," says Douglas College Biology Instructor Val Schaefer.
"They have very different problems. In Vancouver, it’s air quality, water quality,
green space. In Victoria, it’s liquid and solid waste management."

began in the Gulf War last year.

Imagine how Iraqi civilians must
have felt, and are still feeling a year
later. As Douglas College ESL Instruc-
tor Mordecai Briemberg points out,
the horrific images have faded for us,
but for many people in the Middle
East, the effects of the war are anything
but over.

"Once we disconnect from the TV,
the war is over for us, but generations
of people were directly affected," says
Briemberg. "Five million people were
made refugees."

Briemberg has edited a book called
It Was, lt Was Not- Essays and Art on
the War Against Iraq. Royalties from
the book, published by New Star
Books in Vancouver, will go to
humanitarian aid for Iraqi civilians in
the form of medicine.

"It’s intended for people who are |
troubled by what they saw, and who
are interested in seeing that there are
peaceful solutions to conflict in the
Middle East."
