INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / MARCH 28, 1989 Athletic Update MEN’S BASKETBALL The Douglas Royals went to Ed- monton March 14-19 to compete in the Canadian Colicges Athletic As- sociauion Championships and, al- though pfacing a disappointing 4th, acquitted themselves very well. Ist game: Royals vs. Lethbridge Half-time: 49 - 54 (Lethbridge) Final: 87 - 91 (Lethbridge) Chris Schrick & Sean Beasley 23 points; Glen Cote 22 points 2nd game: Royals vs. Briercrest Half-time: 47 - 28 (Royals) Final: 93 - 62 (Royals) Glen Cote 18 points; Sean Beasley 15 points. 3rd game: Royals vs. Nova Scotia Teachers College Half-time: 67 - 35 (Royals) Final: 112 - 73 (Royals) slen Cote 25 points; Phil Taplicy 22 points. 4th game: Royals vs. Trinity Western Half-time: 38 - 33 (Royals) Final: 68 - 69 (Trinity) Willis Parness 15 points; Wayne Best 11 points. Trinity Westem wins the bronze medal. Douglas places 4in. Sean Beasley - Tournament All- Star. Gold Medal - NAIT Silver - Lethbridge C.C. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Royals finished the season in style as they won top seed for the BCCAA playoffs by beating Canboo College by 23 poinis, after losing to them the night before by 14. BCCAA semi-final playoffs matched the Royals with Malaspina College in a best of three series. The Royals swept the Mariners in two straight, 73-57 and 84-55. These wins guaranteed Douglas a berth to the CCAA Nationals. The following weckend, Royals faced Cariboo College for the BCCAA championship and better seeding in the national toumament. Royals swept Cariboo in two straight, 88-67 and 87-62 to take the gold medal and higher seed. Three days later, Royals flew to Grande Prairie, Alberta, site of the 1989 CCAA national Women’s Basketball Championships. In the first round, Douglas came up against a hot Nova Scotia team that led the Royals 31-29 at the half. Royals came out with rencwed determination to play tough defense and to push the ball hard on of- fense. Royals dominated to win 75- 54. Andrea Jackson led with 21, while Ethel Atte had 19 and Dallas Jorgenson and Janice Halls cach contributed 10. In the second round, Douglas met Lethbridge Community College of Alberta, last year’s #2 team in Canada. Lethbridge is anchored by 6'7" Laurie Hockridge and ended up eventually winning the National Championships over Quebec. | Royals played one of their best game of the season, but fell short 72-62. This 10 point win for Lethbridge was their closest game as they had earlier downed Bniercrest (Sask.) by about 30 and later defeated Quebec by about 20. Royals were ied by Ethel Atte with 26 points, Janice Halls 11 points, and Claudia Zamprogno with 10 points. In the game that would determine who would go on to the bronze | medal game, Royals faced host | Grande Prairie College. The game was extremely rough and often out of control as the hometown team relied na very physical style to con- tain the quicker Royals. With three starters oul and over cight minutes to go, Royals tried to hang on, but missed some key foul shots and lay- ups to fall short 70-68. Andrea Jackson led Royals with 28 points. The final game for the fifth place matched Royals with Bnercrest. The game was fairly close but Douglas controlled the tempo throughout and downed Briercrest 83-61. Ethel Atte led with 21 while Andrea Jackson had 18 and Claudia Zamprogno 14. Andrea Jackson was presented the "All-Canadian" plaque during the awards banquet. Andrea is the third player from the Royals Women’s Basketball team in four years to be named to the All- Canadian team. WRESTLING The Douglas College Wrestling Team competed in the Canadian National championships held in Regina, Saskatchewan last week.
