Stephanie Smith, OP Cake Eater ia Canucks these days are making hockey look like a piece of cake. Each win is more and more icing on the cake that is going to be their inevitable winning of the Northwest Division title this year. And really, who wouldn’t want a cake made of mostly icing? Sorry, salute to cakes issue. You try and write a sports section about cake! Then you'll all forgive me for the horrible cake references. I promise they’re done for now. The team has not lost since February 7, when they blew it against Chicago. This is just insane for a team that no one thought would go anywhere this season. This team is gelling at exactly the right time, and it is awesome to watch. Coach Alain Vigneault has broken the record for most wins by a coach in his rookie season in Canucks history. He has 36 now. The Canucks are only a few points behind the best teams in the league. Pretty impressive for a team, again, that was not supposed to make a Canucks Corner splash this year. They didn’t even make the playoffs last year. Is it because of good coaching? Is it all Roberto Luongo? Maybe it’s the Sami Salo overtime special. Who knows? What I do know is that it’s actually fun to talk about this team this year. Last year you could talk about a rare win, or a game in which they didn’t blow it. This year those conversations come few and far between. I don’t want to jinx it of course, but I don’t think I can. This team is meshing in all the right ways now and I don’t see that kind of chemistry disappearing anytime soon. The only thing I worry about now is next week. The trade deadline. The Canucks don’t really need anything at the deadline, but I think they might try and make a move. This could either compliment what we have already, or blow the newfound chemistry to shit. If they keep up they play as of late making the playoffs will be a piece of cake. (Sorry) Douglas Sports Corner Calendar of Upcoming Games Badminton: CCAA Nationals.
