Mad Hatter A Douglas College Newsletter. September 18, 1985 BRAHMS SCHOLARSHIP CONCERT Scholarship concerts are a labour of love for renowned Canadian pianist Robert Silverman. This month the one-time Canadian Music Competition overall winner will be performing to raise money for the music students at Douglas College. "I'll be doing some extended pieces and some short ones," Silverman says. "Johannes Brahms first work and one of his last pieces." "Some of these will be esoteric and others are rather well known, such as the waltzes." His wife Ellen, co-ordinator of the Piano discipline at Douglas College, will join him at the piano for the waltzes in duet. A similar scholarship concert raised $1,200 two years ago and Robert also performs benefits for the University of British Columbia, where he sits in residence. In 19 years of marriage the list of locations for Robert and Ellen Silverman's concerts reads like a world atlas. And they share an equally lengthy list of credits. Robert debuted with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra at age 14 and has performed with the Chicago Symphony, the Leningrad Philharmonic, the Boston Pops and at Expo 67. He has a dozen albums to his credit and recently recorded on the Marquee label.
