Campus Creations Lucky we live in a rainforest No snow = better dressed for 2010 By Stephanie Trembath, Fashion Editor (Ciro the rest of Canada wakes . up toa dazzling blanket of white and snowflakes falling from the sky reminiscent of a holiday postcard, it is a bit depressing to wake up Christmas morning to grey pavement and the sound of rain pattering on the rooftops. Christmas trees, shortbread, the big guy in the jolly red suit, and mistletoe are all symbolic of the holiday but it always feels less festive and somewhat empty here in Vancouver when there are no snowballs to be thrown or snowmen to be rolled. Instead of complaining about no snow, I should really be thankful for B.C.’s temperate climate seeing as the trouble snow brings really isn’t worth the pretty picture outdoors. I have awful memories of stuffing a snowsuit under my Halloween costume as a child when I lived in the Prairies, and of spending way too much time getting dressed to go out; multiple layers, snow pants, thick jacket, toque, mittens, and proper footwear are a must when it snows that much. Unlike Vancouver, wearing Uggs or a leather jacket outside doesn’t cut it in the snow or cold weather Maria Asselin-Roy proved how comfy and classy we Vancouverites can look all year round thanks to the lack of snow in December. Decked out in a comfy pair of denim washed jeans tucked neatly into a pair of brown buttoned §f boots (which she tastefully selected from a dozen pairs of shoes at her back door), Maria layered a couple of black and green tank tops under a fitted leather black jacket. Her outfit was complete with a rich purple toque and long knit scarf before she headed out into the drizzling rain and foggy streets. Her favorite winter fashion item, she says, is a grey toque with a fluffy bobble on the top given to her by her dad. “It’s probably out of the 1960s or something,” Maria said, “My dad used to wear it.” Incredibly vintage; worth holding onto and beats any new trend that designers come up with. In her first year at Douglas, Maria is pursuing a degree in the Bachelor of Arts and is interested in astronomy and photography. New Year’s 2009: all By Stephanie Trembath, Fashion Editor mid a room full of people, glasses A champagne and beer being passed around, girls in darling outfits with camera’s and clutches squeezed under armpits, it’s New Years Eve and everyone wants to look their best and find a midnight kiss. Letting go of past inhibitions and entering a whole new year causes feelings of excitement and angst on January 31, thus new outfits must be bought. While *80s glam was brought back during 2009, (bringing acid wash, neon, sequins, leather, that glitters up locks they go perfectly with a little black dress. With jewellery it’s smartest to choose one statement piece to tie together your outfit; earrings such as these are best worn without any necklaces or bracelets. Dripping pink gemstones set in a gold netted pattern is all that’s needed to be the belle of the ball. A simple white or cream coloured shirt makes this necklace appear more delicate while darker tones bring out the razzle dazzle of the salmon pink and gold. If 2009 was a year of thigh-high boots and glitter I cannot wait to see what 2010 brings. and oversized jewels with it), some of the ‘80s trends will be left in 09 P while others make their debut over the holiday season. Sequins! Sequins everywhere! On sweaters and hats and tank tops and dresses, in all sorts of colors and sizes. Silver, black, and gold sequins were a huge hit as the subtle sparkle is just enough to make the outfit classy and not tacky; too many rhinestones and glitter often ends up looking like you’ ve tried too hard. In London, the micro-mini skirt is all the rage with rainbow sequins in a horizontal pattern. Super svelte and with a high waist, this piece looked cute paired with black leggings and | pumps. 2 Chunky jewellery and long dangly necklaces were a fun fashion fad that will hopefully continue in 2010. These bold black earrings with gold designs are flashy and fun, and when worn with red lipstick and swept Modern Muse Lily Cole: High Street hotshot of 2010 By Stephanie Trembath, Fashion Editor Hollywood’s latest hotshot is straight out of London, England (only the most fashion-forward city in the world known for its innovative and offbeat style); and with a name that sounds like a new Dior perfume, and a porcelain face complete with almond shaped blue eyes and delicate features that contrast heavily with the mess of fiery red hair falling down to her waist, Miss Lily Cole looks somewhat like a devilish pixie or seductive elf when she saunters down the runway. A model for top haute couture since she was. 14, Cole is Hollywood’s hottest new star as she turns heads in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. Discovered at 14 by photographer I: should come as no surprise that Steven Meisel, Cole stole hearts with her innocent stare and copper mane and was quickly named “Model of the Year” at the 2004 British Fashion Awards. Since then Cole has been regularly featured in Vogue, and walked in many top fashion shows including Anna Sui, Chanel, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Versace, and Louis Vuitton. Early 2009, after a slight blip in her career concerning a nude photograph on the cover of a French Playboy, Cole was signed to model for Rimmel London alongside Kate Moss, and became the face of Tiffany & Co for Britain. A prominent face for Marks and Spencer, spokespeople of the company claim that Cole is “a popular; high profile, model who is very much in demand,” which is why so many different companies wish to work with her. At 21 Cole has already accomplished what most girls only dream of, but that did not allow her to stop there as she signed on to play Valentina in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. Heath Ledger’s last film, his role is filled by other actors including Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell, due to his death mid-film. Cole was fortunate enough to work with this bevy of beautiful men and claims that film is more demanding than modeling, and requires more “emotional and intellectual commitment.” In Gilliams movie it’s almost as if Cole is putting on her own private fashion show for the audience as she changes from a fluffy white haired fairy to a silver-cheeked tree nymph, and then stark naked in nothing but bear fur and shrubbery. In a final scene, Cole’s long limbs and model physique is highlighted in a rich red dress with her hair flowing down her back; Gilliam clearly chose his actress based on her previous career. Since starring in The Imaginarium, Cole has been working closely with Marilyn Manson in Phantasmagoria, an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland set to release in the fall of 2010"Quirky characters, creepy settings, and dramatic costuming made Cole perfect for the part and accentuate her contrasting features. Unlike many other twinning careerists (those singers turned actresses whom nobody really knows what they’re good at) Lily Cole is this years Hollywood hit and remains Britain’s youngest face for Vogue. Her slim features and piercing blue-eyes may just make her the next Kate Moss... only this time with without the sweet blond hair. 11
