They discovered that Linschoten was looking for a student assistant, and Emmerson knew just where he could find one. Enter Michael Hoadley, a student in the Consumer and Job Preparation Program. For just over a year now, Hoadley has spent two days a week at the New Westminster Campus working with DLS. He checks and changes overhead projector bulbs, cleans the glass and replaces the plastic rolls, checks the TVs and VCRs to make sure they're working, and occasionally dusts everything to keep out damaging chalk dust. “T like my job,” says Hoadley. “Security knows me really well now because I’m always getting them to Open up rooms for me.” Hoadley’s hard work and dedication haven't gone unnoticed. “He's a great employee,” says Linschoten. Bruce Clarke of DLS agrees. “It’s a real boon to have Michael working with us. He finds things that are wrong with the equipment that other people have missed, and that saves us a lot of time.” Hoadley isn’t the only one who works hard. Peter Taylor and Yvonne Stevens, Instructional Facilitators in the program, match students to a job and then work with them on job training, basically learning the job first, teaching it to the students, and then fading into the background as the students begin to work independently. “For Michael, we devised a plan with a detailed checklist,” says Taylor. “He checks off every room that he’s been to, what equipment he looked at, and he lists anything that is missing or broken. We've gone through six or seven versions and have it down to a fine art now.” Designed for students with intellectual disabilities, the Consumer and Job Preparation program teaches the personal, social and work skills needed to get and keep a job and to use community services. If you're interested in hiring a Consumer and Job Preparation student, please contact Jean Emmerson at local 5171.
