The denial of the government to recognize important projects such as the Youth Crisis Line indicates the government’s lack of concern for the youth of today. SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS " SSS SSS a by CYNTHIA KILT government has established a grant program for special projects, which encourage young people in activities designed to observe International Year of the Youth in Canada. The Youth Crisis Line, if in opera- eA SURPRISES tion, would be a support and referral e service much in the same way as the other Crisis Line. With one important difference, the telephones would be manned by young people as a service to young people. The Co-ordinator of the Youth Crisis Line, Teresa Maclnnes, a Douglas College student, has been training young volunteers for this program, even though funding has been denied by the government, in hope of finding alternate funding. The suicide statistics for the year of 1983 indicate the need for such a support group. The total number of suicides in B.C. in the age group up to and including 21 years of age was 57. Young people are more apt to told to their ‘‘peers’’ about their problems than they are to talk to adults. The Youth Crisis Line was rejected for funding for two main reasons. The first of which being that, as with almost every government program, the grants given are for short-term projects. The Youth Crisis Line would be an on-going service to the public. But the federal government only gives funding to ‘‘projects that aren’t in- dicated to be ongoing.’ The second reason being that the majority of the projects currently being funded by this grant program make young people aware of their problems but do nothing to help the -young people solve them. Donald Wilson of the Secretary of State (youth sector) stated ‘‘It’s up to them (young people) what they do with it (being aware of their problems).’’
