Golf coach named for women’s team Talk about good and lucky. Even before she took her first tee shot as a qualified golf pro, Tara Smetany had already relished the thrill of two holes-in-one. Superstitious golfers should note that both aces came on seventh holes and, yes, she drained both using a seven iron. Now Smetany’s talents come to Douglas College as she takes on the responsibility of coaching the fledgling women’s golf program. The team begins competing with squads from Malaspina and Camosun Colleges in the newly formed BCCAA women’s golf division this fall. Douglas College has captured the men’s title for the last four seasons. Smetany is now recruiting from the College’s student body to begin forming the women’s squad. She can’t’ predict the level of experience her players will possess, but says her first priority is simply making them feel at home on the course. “The most important things are to build a solid swing so they will feel comfortable,” says Smetany, “and to go out and learn to enjoy the game and not be intimidated by it. I’m excited about starting a program from the ground level and I’m sure that developing players will find it a wonderful experience.” Smetany first Douglas College women’s golf coach Tara Smetany hits decided she might out of the sand at Westwood Plateau. She then played for several years with the Alberta team at the Canadian Junior Girls championships, winning a gold medal at age 15. Later she was accepted at the San Diego Golf Academy, where she learned everything from turf management and supervising a pro shop to teaching duffers how to traverse a 550-yard dogleg. The rigorous curriculum also required students to golf daily on their choice of four plush Southern California courses with names like Whispering Palms. Smetany now teaches at the Westwood Plateau Golf Academy in Coquitlam and will enter the 36-hole qualifying event for the Canadian Professional Golfers’ Association this fall.
