Words flow on the River Writers — and readers — at Douglas College rejoice. Write on the River, the Federation of BC Writers Conference and Annual General Meeting, is coming to the New Westminster Campus in June. Calvin Wharton and David Zieroth, Creative Writing instructors, Maureen Nicholson, Print Futures Coordinator and Cathy Stonehouse, Editor of Event magazine will present From Poetry to Press Releases: Writing at Douglas College. Briefly Dr. Michael Wilson of the Geology Department has had a paper accepted for publication in Quaternary Science Reviews. The paper, co-authored with Brent Ward (SFU) and others, is entitled Port Eliza Cave: North American west coast interstadial environment and implications for human migrations. \t describes Dr. Ward’s excavations at a cave on the west coast of Vancouver Island, where animal bones dating from 16,000 to 18,000 years old were found. Dr. Wilson is a specialist in paleontology, and this sample of bones of marmot, marten, voles, toads, and several species each of birds and fish provides our first glimpse of cool- climate fauna that existed just before the last glacial advance in the area. Such finds are extremely rare because the glacial advance 15,000 years ago scoured away many of the earlier deposits. Wayne Piper of the Print Shop is March’s 50/50 winner. He takes home $724 and student aid increases by the same amount. ie Event magazine congratulates writer Kanina Dawson, whose creative non-fiction piece The End of August, first published in Event 31/2 (Summer 2002) is a finalist for a National Magazine Award in the Personal Journalism Category.
