Unlike the other evening concerts of the semester, this one is free. The ensemble consists of flautist Kathryn Cernauskas, guitarist Michael Strutt and percussionist Robert Caldwell. All three musicians teach in the music department. Making a special appearance with the ensemble will be vocalist Owen Duggan. The ensemble will be performing pieces by Stephen Chatman, Leo Brouwer, Daniele Zanettovich, Hans Werner Henze, and Robert Caldwell. This last piece, entitled The Attic, .is a composition written for solo percussionist on electronics, and was originally scored as an accompaniment for a dance. The dance tells the story of a woman who is trapped in a time loop, experiencing the same segment of time over and over. The tones are all sampled, and include sounds such as a gamalang, finger cymbals, and sonic washes or “landscapes.” If you have had opportunity to see any of these performers live, you know you won’t want to miss this evening of experimental “new” music.
