FEBRUARY 23, 1983 Time Running Out by Martin Hemerthk The gym was finally put to use last week and from all accounts it’s a pretty good gym except watch out for some of that concrete. But hang on a minute, there may be trouble in paradise. The men’s and women’s basket- ball teams may not be able to use the gym for league play. Why you may ask?the bleachers are in, the baskets are up, the lines are down and the teams are ready. Just one slight hitch, there is no clock and as a result no member of the Totem Conference has to play any games here. How-. ever the clock might be here in time and then again it might not. If the college knew the gym was going to be ready by Feb- ruary 15, why couldn’t they have seen to it that something as vital as a clock would have been installed by now. The problem is twofold;first of all, due to some good foresight by Terry Leonard, the hombre in charge of buying the time- piece which does basketball and wrestling scores, the sys- tem we're getting will be equipped for two clocks even though the college can only afford one right now. At $4,400 a crack we were lucky to get one! The logic behind the move is that in a couple of Basketball Playoff Showdown by Martin Hemerik I've said it before and I’ll say it again, don’t let their record _just been turning it on this last The Douglas’ women’s bas- fool you. On Friday, Feb- ruary 25 at 5:30 they play Selkirk college in the first of two games here with the se- cond game coming the next day at 10 AM.The Saturday game is probably too early for most of you people but Friday is pub night so you’ll be in the building anyway. I haven’t seen them win a pressure game yet and I hope that I'll see them change that and win two this weekend. Incidentally, if you’re too in- toxicated (hammered) on Friday night to know who our team is, it’s the team with DOUGLAS printed on the front of their uniform. So come on down on Friday night and watch high calibre basketball. Otherwise the gym would have to be comepletely rewired at a considerable ex- pense which translated means no other clock. Because of these modifications the clock took longer to be made than is usually the case. The other problem is Viking Alexander Metals, a Toronto based company, who for some strange reason is taking their time in sending us the clock. Hopefully it will arrive in time. If not our only hope rests with Betty Lou Hayes, Douglas’ Athletic Director who has a knack of pulling a rabbit out of a hat at the last minute, is trying to find a timepiece we can rent before the exhibition game against Red Deer on February 23 and the two crucial matches against Selkirk on February 25 and 26. So all we can do is keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best. Should we manage to acquire a clock check the posters around the foyer for game times and check out our playoff calibre basketball teams. It’s going to be your last chance to see them this season. Shanda Steeves is Douglas’ newest fitness instructor although by no means is she new to fitness. Shanda teaches fitness classes at the Columb- ian Fitness Center and at Body Language in Vancouver. She’s been teaching fitness for a year and a half and in the world of aerobics this makes her a seasoned veteran. This is her second year at Douglas as a phys ed student. Last year she played on the women’s basketball team. Shanda is 19 and hails from the good old province of B.C. Her fitness class will be held on Thursday afternoons from 1 till 2 and will be along the same lines as Christine’s sessions featuring warm. up, aerobic, floor and cool down exercises.
