INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / APRIL 17, 1990 Sea cruise and sunshine await contest winner ouglas College employees Helen and Bruce Clarke will be doing some California Dream- ing next month. Helen was the grand prize winner in the 20th Anniversary Time Capsule Contest. She won a trip for two to California in May, which includes airfare to Los An- geles, three nights at the Newport Beach Mariott Hotel, and a trip home aboard the luxurious Star Princess cruise liner. Clarke, a Learning Resources Technical Assistant in the library and her husband Bruce, a main- tenance assistant in the Instruction- al Media Services department, were both present when the win- ning entry was drawn by Gordon Gilgan, Dean of the Academic Division and chairman of the 20th Anniversary Steering Committee during a trumpet-heralded Helen Clarke and Bruce Clarke ceremony in the Douglas Room April 6th. Clarke, the beach-bound win- S pr ing awards continued from page 2 dedication of so many private citizens, community groups, organizations and corporations, this success would not have been possible. With their ongoing support, we can continue to help students achieve their academic goals." The Foundation also presented several Certificates of Appreciation to College and community volunteers in recognition of their generous contributions in time and effort to support Foundation campaigns. A special award was presented to George Mussalem of Maple Ridge, who was among the initial supporters of Douglas College. Mussalem has since served on advisory committees of Maple Ridge, the Douglas Col- lege Student Trust, and most recently, the Douglas College Foundation. His association with the College spans 25 years. "The awards demonstrate the ongoing devotion of community volun- teers to Douglas College,” said Bill Day, president of Douglas College. "These people (such as George Mussalem) have been working since the mid-60’s initially to bring the College into being, and most recently, in order to provide aid to students who are increasingly beset by inflation and rising College expenses." ; "We appreciate their contribution." ml gs. sages FOUNDATION ner, says she was "surprised" when her name was pulled from the draw box. "As Gordon was read- ing the winning entry, I realized it was mine. I couldn’t believe it," she said. Clarke’s winning entry sug- gested that a 20th Anniversary Calendar and pin, a Community Programs and Services brochure, and a Douglas College T-shirt be included in the Time Capsule. "I thought that basically anything with the 20th Anniversary logo on it would be good to include,” she said. Clarke’s husband Bruce says the couple love California and visit it often, but the cruise and a stay at the first-class Mariott Hotel will be a first for them. "This is so fantastic," said Bruce. "We’ve been to Anaheim before, but we’ve never stayed at the Newport Beach Mariott." The contest was organized by the 20th Anniversary Steering Committee, which plans to seal a Time Capsule at the closing ceremony of the 20th Anniversary celebration next fall. The commit- tee asked faculty, staff, and ad- ministrators for ideas on what to include in the Time Capsule. "We were overwhelmed by the response," said Gilgan. "We received literally hundreds of entries, and we'll be publishing a complete list of all the suggestions in an upcoming issue of the In- side." Gilgan says members of the 20th Anniversary Steering Com- mittee will weed through the entries and select approximately 10 items to include in the Time Capsule. continued on page 7
