This report has been summarized in the Bulletin of the HRCC for January, and has been the basis for further negotiations with the Dept. of External Affairs and the Embassy in Italy. The HRCC has now presented its case to the Canadian Ambassador in. Italy and to the Advisory Committee for the Canadian Cultural Institute in Rome, and the Advisory Committee discussed the question at length at its : meeting of April 26th, 1977. The Committee wished to be kept informed of any further developments in planning for the School, but requested the HRCC to demonstrate more fully the need for such an establishment. In particular, M. Fortier, the chairman of the Advisory Committee has asked for: a. statistics on how many Canadian scholars do indeed go to Rome and would use the academic services a School might provide, and, an inventory of facilities present- ly available in Rome for Canadian scholars. The inventory (b) must be ange in Rome itself, but the statistics (a) must be compiled in Canada. Therefore, I am asking interested western Canadian scholars to provide me with answers for these questions: 1. How often have you gone to Rome (or Italy) in the past ten yrs. for a) research, or b) teaching a course in connection with an academic program for Canadian students? How useful would you have found a Canadian School, if one had existed? With what resources could a School have provided you? With thanks in advance, Sincerely yours, J.A.S. Evans Professor of Classics
