II. Resolution

A. What administrative assumption would initiate a positive
and productive attitude regarding faculty development?

B. The advisory committee decided that the assumption must
be consistent with, and in the spirit of, the assumption govern-
ing contract renewals.

C. The advisory committee proposed that the administration
make explicit the following logical extension of their assumption
that faculty are competent and responsible: that they are also
COMMITTED TO, AND INVOLVED IN, FACULTY DEVELOPMENT.

D. Given this working assumption, it remained only for the
advisory committee to design an organizational structure and

implementation mechanism that would retain the spirit of the
assumption and serve to dispel ambiguities and uncertainties.

III. Proposal
The organizational structure and implementation mechanism
A. The administrative assumption:

"We assume the faculty are committed to, and involved
in, continuing faculty development."

B. The administrative stance/response that follows from
such an assumption:

"How can we (i.e., the administration) facilitate
faculty development?"

C. The faculty response:
"By authorizing and funding the following proposal:"
1) There are two categories of faculty development:
a) College wide, departmentally non-specific
activities
b) Departmental and disciplinary specific activi-
ties

2) Both categories should receive equal funding.

3) The administration should allot a percentage of
the operating budget to faculty development.

4) Committees comprised of faculty should administer
these funds.
