INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / JANUARY 22, 1991 Arizona Basketball Tourney Results The Douglas College Men’s Bas- ketball team faced tough competi- tion in a tournament in Phoenix, Arizona over the Christmas holiday. Despite an inspired effort, Douglas College lost their opening game 67 - 62 to. the NJCAA 16th ranked Indian Hills. Leading the way for Douglas College were Onkar Hayre with 19 points and Taras Maslechko with 17 points. Foul troubles late in the second game cost Douglas College as they lost to the Fashion Institute of New York 75 - 61. With less than 3 1/2 minutes and trailing by 5 points, Douglas College lost their cool and took two technical fouls to sink their chances of a come- back. In their final game of the Tour- nament, Taras Maslechko’s 21 points led Douglas College to a 90 - 83 victory over New Mexico Military Institute. Also chipping in were Chris Vandemark with 18 points and Onkar Hayre with 16 points. Also taking a trip to Arizona was the Douglas College Wom- en’s Basketball team for action in Tucson..The women started off the Tournament well with a resound- ing 87 - 43 victory over Team Sweden. Leading the way were Carrie Carlson with 22 points and Carol Sanford hitting for 13 points. After the initial success, Douglas College went down to defeat in the their next three games. Douglas College’s difficul- ty at the freethrow line, hitting on only 8 of 24 attempts, was in part to blame for a disappointing 60 - 56 loss to Cochise College. The women’s team’s went on to face North Pioneer College, losing 53 - 39, and a Tucson All-Star Team, losing 74 - 59.
