INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / APRIL 10, 1990 Taking the guesswork out of photography Of the wrong film, or cutting off your subject’s head — these are a few of the problems facing the inexperienced photographer. “The major concern for amateurs is learning to use their equipment properly,” says Deborah Shackleton, a profes- sional photographer and educator. “Fully automated camera systems may become dysfunctional if the operator is not aware of the basic components and how they inter- act.” Shackleton is teaching a two- session course at Douglas College called Photographic Skills for the Amateur Photographer on April 12 and 19. “It’s designed for the hobbyist and serious amateur photographer who is looking to become more adept at taking pictures technical- ly and compositionally,” says Shackleton. Topics such as backgrounds, portraits, groupings, close-ups and scenics will be explored. With emphasis on the artistic and mechanical aspects of photog- raphy, students can expect to achieve the balance necessary be- tween expression and form, ena- bling them to produce quality pictures, Shackleton says. “The goal is to produce a photo with visual clarity, design, and proper exposure. “Ideally, the end result will be reflective of how the photog- rapher experienced the subject or event.” Hands-on experience and lots of practice are the keys to success- ful picture-taking, says Shack- leton. Students will be given an opportunity to demonstrate their new skills in an assignment using colour negative or slide film. Eager photographers are en- couraged to bring their en- thusiasm, questions and cameras.
