douglas college Inter Office Memo Date: August 21, 1986. @ To: DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD From: GORDON W. GILGAN Re: ACTING PRESIDENT'S REPORT A. External Matters - Municipal The termination of the lease between IDEAFEST and the College has consumed a lot of administrative time. The principals of Ideafest have not been able to raise sufficient financial support to complete the removal of the sets. This work has been undertaken by the College and is now near completion. Costs for the removal will come from the performance monies deposited with the College in the original contract. The negotiations between the City of New Westminster and Douglas College regarding use of city parks and specifically Simcoe Park have been concluded with the final agreement appearing on the Agenda this evening. This represents the culmination of several years of negotiations involving Bill Day, Dr. Terry Clement, Bill Morfey and other College staff. The 25 year agreement should provide us oO with the access we require to playing fields in the future. The College was invited to participate in the last run of the Sampson-V before it reached its final mooring place. This was a delightful evening in which the Rotary $45,000 barrel was test launched. The barrel will be lauched officially in Lytton on August 29th and a lottery is being held to determine the arrival time in New Westminster. The City of New Westminster held a reception for a delegation from its sister city Moriguchi. The students from Momoyama were invited to attend as well. It was an interesting evening with entertainment provided by our guests. Members of the delegation were taken to homes in the area after the reception to see a Canadian home. B. External Matters - Education Momoyama Visit - Douglas College was proud to host 5 members of the faculty, the parents support group, and also the President of Momoyama (St. Andrews) University. The delegation was able to meet with Douglas College Board Members; the Mayor of New Westminster, and the Aldermen; the President and Vice-President of SFU. We had very productive discussions with the delegation and will, as a result, have more students from Momoyama studying here in the future on a regular basis. The College received a response from the Ministry of Post Secondary Education to the revision to the 5-Year Plan. This letter a copy of which is in the correspondence package, is very affirming of the College's direction, and is a clear indication of support from the Minictrv.
