There was a large crowd by the time the doors opened at 8:30am on April 25 and the dentists and their assistants started treating the working people, low income families and individuals who have few resources for dental care. By the time they were finished with the last patient, it was 6:30pm. Nearly 100 patients were treated by the volunteer team of seven dentists, six dental assistants, four Douglas College instructors and two volunteers to handle the paperwork. Many needed tooth extractions, root canals and restorative work. “There were many people who were in pain and got relief,” said Dental Assisting Instructor Linda Symington. “It was very busy, but it was well worth the it.” This is the third year Douglas College has participated in Community Dental Day. Held in partnership with the Association of Dental Surgeons of BC, the event is made possible by volunteers who donate their time and expertise to help those who need dental care most. “Tt really was an unbelievable experience,” said Symington. “Everyone worked nonstop.” Ai Dentist Bernard Jin (left) and Dental Assistant Cindy Sievenpiper with patient Christina Windsor, who has just had her wisdom teeth out.
