The bursaries and awards provide much- needed assistance with basic necessities. The office helps as many students as possible, but many students, especially students with children, need far more than we are able to provide. We use this opportunity to identify Briefly Kudos A biological experiment in the Faculty of Science and Technology proved successful and the results are amazing. Katrina Anne Meister made her debut on September 26 weighing in at Ibs, 15 oz. Proud dad, Gerry Meister is a Biology instructor. Tomas Cedric Chapman arrived on the scene on October 2 and weighed in at 7lbs. 12 oz. Kathryn Duff, Tomas’s mom and Chair of the Coaching Program, is elated. Happy birthday to Sarah Christina McNeil, born October 19 and weighing 8 lbs, 5 oz. Sarah's dad is new Chemistry instructor Stephen McNeil. Congratulations to Catherine Doll (Library) and her husband Kevin Derksen who welcomed their first child, Alexandra Ruth Derksen, on September 19. Joyce Hunter (Financial Aid) reports that she became a grandmother (for the ninth time) on September 11 when young Evan joined the family. As you might guess, Christmas is getting a tad expensive, but Joyce is thrilled. Congratulations to Douglas College Sport Science and Wrestling alumni Daniel Igali. Igali and Douglas College Coach Dave McKay student families in need of alittle extra help. We invite you to assist these Douglas College students and their families by sponsoring a family for a Christmas hamper. Last year, through the generosity of indi- viduals and departments at the college, 26 student families were helped. Child, Family & Community Studies collected enough money from its employees at Thanksgiving to provide 100 turkey dinners to the homeless in the downtown eastside area. Kathleen Wallden of CFCS says she was pleased with the effort and challenges other faculties to meet or beat the $200 donation. Event magazine was one of 10 magazines — and the sole Canadian publication — that received “feature” treatment in the 2001 Poets Market. The directory lists more than 1,000 journals and magazines. Congratulations, Event! The Communications and Marketing Office has won the Gold Medallion of Excellence award from the National Council for Marketing and Public - Relations. They include /uzo the Open (Golden Eagle Press), Flying Wounea led (University Press of Florida), The Altering Eye (Borealis Press) and Common Longing: The Teresa Poems and A Canticle for Mary and Martha (The Mellen Poetry Series). The books represent material written during the past 10 years. CCAA Award Douglas College has won the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association's Award for Innovation for 2000-2001. The award, announced October 2, honors CCAA members who have added new sports to their athletic programs or maintained existing ones through innovative funding, marketing and/or partnerships. The College has set into motion a program which benefits both the students and the College. Student athletes at the Centre for Sport, Recreation and Wellness are able to participate in courses in the field of coaching, family, five to cight people = large family). Women’s History Month (October) came early to Douglas College this year, according to Jacqueline Gresko, Chair of the Women's History Network of BC. The College hosted the WHN BC annual conference Sept. 29 and 30 on the theme of Women and Health. The gathering, which covered topics from First Nations traditional healing to stories of Mission’s community hospital, was successful thanks to presenters and College employee support. Board/Association News At the September 21, 2000 College Board meeting, Harbinder Kainth Jassal was re-clected Chair of the Board for 2000-2001. ‘Trudy Montgomery and Gwen Chute were elected as Co- Vice Chairs. The Alumni Association's new President is Arleigh Bell, a General Nursing graduate and director at large for the Registered Balancing act Debbie Lawless (Payroll) tries out an exercise ball during a workshop held October 5 as part of Health and Safety Week. Nurses Association of B.C. Arleigh has been an executive on the Board for some time. Bell replaces Dave Seaweed, who has resigned as president after three years but remains First Nations Services Coordinator. Employees on the Move Denise Kelly is the new Director of Finance. Denise has been with the College for the past year as the Comptroller. Prior to that she was with the Vancouver International Airport Authority. Denise takes over from Karen Maynes, who is the new VP, Finance and Administration. Satinder Dherari has accepted the evening Collection Control Assistant position at the David Lam Library. In Institutional Research & Planning, Laura Toerper moves from auxiliary to regular as Research & Planning Analyst, replacing Barb Brawn, who has resigned. Theft Alert The New Westminster Campus parking lot saw an increase in vehicle break-ins and thefts in October. Please keep your vehicle's doors locked, windows completely closed, and valuables out of sight. Report any suspicious people to Security at local 2400.
