Box 2503, New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, V3L 5B2 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Douglas and Kwantlen Colleges should receive the same per capita funding as the other Lower Mainland colleges, say 86% of the respondents to a survey conducted for the student and faculty associations at Douglas and Kwantlen Colleges. The survey, carried out by CQ Research of Vancouver, polled two hundred adults from the Kwantlen and Douglas regions and asked about their attitudes towards the two colleges. According to the President of the Douglas & Kwantlen Faculty Association, Geoff Dean, Kwantlen College receives only 43% of the funding that residents of the region pay in taxes to support the colleges; Douglas College receives only 63%. "We've learned from this survey that almost everybody thinks the local college is important," said Dean. “They don't like to see it being shortchanged in this way." James Massender, president of the Kwantlen College Student Association, said he was surprised that 75% of the respondents thought that college board members should be elected locally or appointed from local school boards. “Currently, all college board members are appointed by the provincial government," said Massender. “We've always argued that college board members need to be accountable to their community, if the college is to meet the needs of people in the community. I'm very pleased to learn that such a large majority of people agree with us on this point.”
