Bad ref ckey game. SMACK. SMACK. and called Vancouver fo What are you, Magoo, Smack. Bad ref My Ho Love, CF Miley OP Columnist I realize that every team will have some nights where some fat-headed, Cartman- esque egomaniac will cost them a game, but the Canucks didn’t do much to help their own cause in Detroit. They opened the game with a handful of great scoring chances, but were unable to beat the oft-for- gotten Manny Legace. Early in the second, after Brendan Shannahan opened the scoring on a 60-footer that Cloutier should have had, the Vancouver parade to the penalty box continued. Brett Hull scored late in Detroit's elongated two-man advan- tage to put the Wings up a pair. Just to make sure Vancouver wouldn't get a fair shake in this one, Fedor Federov was called for having Chris Chelios skate backwards into him just as he left the box after serv- ing the bench minor. Amazingly, after calling nine penalties in the first two frames, neither ref could find a single infraction in the third. Nick Lidstrom added a third Detroit goal early in the final period, while Mike Keane was able to whip a shot past Legace to break the goose-egg late with five minutes left to play. The loss left Vancouver trailing Detroit by seven points in the Western Conference standings. Last weeks other marquee match- up saw Vancouver heading to Colorado to face the hated Avs. This was the first meeting since Steve Moore concussed Markus Naslund with a crushing elbow on February 16. The only fireworks that materi- alized for this one came in the form of swirling red goal lights. Payback will have to wait until the two- points aren't quite so important. Apparently, Moore was dressed for the game, but the Zamboni saw more ice than he did. The Canucks played catch-up all night long, escaping Colorado with a single point after a 5—5 draw. There were two sides to the Canucks’ coin for the Colorado game. On the one hand, Vancouver's team defense was about as trusty as the playoff predictions from my magic eight ball. On the other hand, they battled back from three sepa- rate two-goal deficits to earn a huge single point versus the front-run- ning Avs. The Canucks continued to get offensive help from their D-men, with Mattias Ohlund, Brent Sopel, and Marek Malik chipping in a sin- gle marker apiece. Sopel added two assists to record a three-point night. Morrison and Naslund completed the Vancouver scoring, with Naslund’s goal being the beauty of the bunch. With the Canucks’ trailing 4-2 late in the second period, Brendan Morrison won a last-minute draw in the Colorado zone. He got the puck to Bertuzzi behind the Colorado goal. Bertuzzi had lost his stick, and managed to somehow find Avs defenseman Karlis Skrastins’ lumber just as the puck came towards him. Bert picked up the opposing players stick and one-timed the puck to a wide-open Naslund in the slot. Nazzy deked forehand to backhand, and roofed the biscuit over a jock- less David Aebischer to give the Canucks some life going into the third. In sharp contrast to the balanced Vancouver attack on the night, the Avs were one-line wonders. The unit of Alex Tanguay, Joe Sakic, and Milan Hejduk accounted for all five Colorado goals. Sakic recorded a hat-trick plus an assist, while Tanguay had two goals and three assists to record his second career five-point game. The game was indicative of Colorado this year: all offense and no “D.” Watch for GM Pierre Lacroix to make the obvious move and bring in a top-flight goalie before Tuesday’s trade deadline. Speaking of the trade deadline, by the time you read this, it'll all be over. All the hype, all the specula- tion, all the dreams of hockey fanat- ics across the league will be either fulfilled or ignored yet again, as team rosters will be largely set for the season. Picking up Brad May will not suffice this year Mr. Burke. You and your management team have been cooing for months about how there are a few bucks stashed away in the Canuck coffers. Time to pony up, and get the team some help. Vancouver players have played their guts out for less money than they could have gotten elsewhere. Vancouver fans have bought every- thing you're selling, including tickets and pricey merchandise. The sub- stantial rise in playoff ticket prices (yet again this season) should buy us an extra centre and a depth defense- man. Cough up “ Mr. Lame Duck,” put McCaw’s money where your big mouth is.
