a) rBan? Jay Schreiber arts editor Tuesday November 10 Matthew Good rocks the Centre for Performing Arts if an all-ages night of pleasing music is your entrée. However, the place that you want to be is at Pub 340 where Local Metal group 13" Prophet bring their thunder along with Entropia, Sythia and Starstruck. Punk rock sluts The Misfits are hitting up the Venue if you feel like it, but be warned, Jerry Only is balding. My Pick: It’s not a night for being Good; check out 13" Prophet, and then jet over for the end of the Misfit’s set. Wednesday November 11 Dropkick Murphys hit up the Commodore if you’re interested in some Celtic fusion. If you’re Irish and your still not there, then where is your pride? If Irish jigs aren’t your thing then chill out at O’Doul’s for the sounds of Bill Coon. My Pick: Unless you’re from Boston, stay at home, it’s Remembrance Day. Call your grandpa or something. Thursday November 12 Check out Capade at the Railway Club for their CD release party. Corb Lund is hanging out at the Commodore with special guest Ridley Bent. My Pick: Railway, always a good time Friday November 13 A Midsummer Night’s Dream premiers at Douglas College’s Muir Theatre; check it out for home-grown talent. If you’re not there, then check out Pucifer at the Performing Arts Centre downtown. My Pick: It’s Friday the 13" so Pucifer is appropriate. The theatre production runs ‘til November 21. Saturday November 14 Product band Kiss takes over GM Place, so if you don’t have tickets, beat up someone who does! Not a rock fan? Tiesto brings an impressive light show and electronic sounds to the Pacific Coliseum if that suits your style better. Feeling classical? It’s Mozart night at the VSO, so don’t you symphonic fans be Hayden. My Pick: For the love of God don’t give your money to Kiss. Choose Tiesto if you’re down with ze clubs, but Mozart has the upper hand. TY Pind. A Lesson well learned as preached by the Prophet Local band is kicking ass and taking names on Vancouver’s Metal scene 13" Prophet By Jay Schreiber, Arts Editor s far as hard working bands are Acne no one knows the term better than the four members of 13" Prophet. If you haven’t seen them on downtown Vancouver’s bar scene or checked them out online, you have yet to call yourself a fan of local metal. During the daylight hours, members of the Prophet can be found study music in Douglas’s New West Campus and have yet to let up with four years of consistent dedication. Originally hailing from the city of PoCompton, the band has found no trouble making its name on downtown’s bar scene. “The scene in Vancouver sucks right now,” lead singer and guitarist Fabian Popovici said about gigging locally. “There’s quality bands, and we dig the support we get, but people need to start goin’ to more shows.” Their upcoming show at Pub 340 on November 10 is a common gig for the group, having also called the recently deceased Cobalt Motor Hotel its home. “Yeah, we’re fucking pissed that the Cobalt shut down!” said both Fabian and Ben Higgins, bassist for the group. “Those shows were awesome, It sucks we won’t get play there anymore,” Higgins mentioned. The group has also enjoyed success playing shows with promotional company Supernova, and have rocked such festivals as East Van’s Brutal Fest. Recently, 13" Prophet took a break to find a new drummer, and have settled on the reverend master of double bass drum Max Freisen. Minister of shred Nico Miraftab holds the holy six-string axe, and along with the prophesizing ways of Fabian and Ben, the group is a complete brick house of thrash. “We don’t really like to restrict our style of music,” Popovici mentioned. “It’s just an influence of booze, weed and a long line of metal.” No doubt the Gospels of Maiden, Motorhead, Priest and Sabbath have foretold the ways of the Prophet, but their style can please just about any metalhead with good taste. The group has a five-track demo out and it can be found on their MySpace: www.myspace.com/13thprophet. The band is still working their way up, but has no problem keeping face on the local scene. Check them out if you know what’s good for you. 15
