See clearly with College Vision Centre Dont forget: if you want Event's Journey worth the wait A short story set in the sugar cane fields of Fiji and originally published in Douglas College's literary magazine Event has won this year’s prestigious $10,000 Journey Prize. The Cane Field by Vancouver writer Kevin Armstrong was first published in the Spring 2000 issue of Event. Many Event-published stories have been nominated for the Journey Prize in the past, but this is the first winning entry. Also, mark your calendars now for Event’ celebratory reading to honour its 30th year in print. The reading will be held on Monday May 6, 3-7 pm in the Amelia Douglas Gallery, New Westminster campus. Snacks and a cash bar will be available. Contributors to our special anniversary issue, including Russell Thornton, Patrick Friesen, Zoe Landale and Kuldip Gill, will be reading from their own work, and friends and staff of Event will be on hand to read excerpts from previous issues of Event. Travis won his weight class at the National Championships in March. Our second wrestler, Jesse Saunders, brought home a bronze. The results of these two wrestlers were good enough to place Douglas College 12th out of 48 American colleges and universities.” Congratulations, all!
