Scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, August 19-20, this year the Fair will try a different format. “We’ ve decided to go conference style,” she says. “So the atmosphere should have more of a relaxed feel. Students will have three different workshops to choose from, so orientation will be more diverse and fun.” But more relaxed doesn’t mean any less organized; in fact, quite the contrary. Mary is putting a special call out now for everyone to pull together and help make the Fair a success. “This event is where new students find out about all the programs, services and activities available at the College,” she says. “So we really need representation from everyone. People need to get involved now so we can organize a good display for the concourse” Tables will be set up in the concourse for each College program and service to publicize their area and set up special displays. During the Fair, guided tours will be conducted throughout the College and an outdoor barbeque will be held to finish up orientation activities. As part of the new curriculum, they are seeking “healthy” families to participate in a learning experience which begins with Semester One students in September, 1996. “We are looking for assistance in establishing a pool of resource families for our students. We hope Douglas College staff and faculty can help,” says Teaching Team member Pauline Dunn. The project involves approximately three one-hour visits per semester with a nursing student, who will address each family’s perspectives on health, health promotion, healing and the health care system. The visits will be planned for a mutually agreeable time, and will be conducted under the supervision of an instructor, available to discuss any questions or concerns. “Thanks to everyone who volunteers or has a family to recommend” says Dunn. She adds that later in the fall General Nursing will be recruiting for a family containing a member experiencing a chronic health challenge, so stay tuned for details. To volunteer, or for more information on either of these projects, please contact Pauline Dunn, Linda Pickthall or Marilyn Rainbow in General Nursing. l
