Recently Matthew Steinbach news editor two groups of students approached a school project in two very different ways. The course they are taking is on health promotion, a part of the Bachelor in Physical Education and Coaching. Their goal is to find something unhealthy on our campus environment and to demonstrate why it is unhealthy. Dave Grender and Steve Hanson took on Douglas College’s Concourse and saw numerous problems, from the physical seating, which is cold concrete, to holes in the glass ceiling, which allow heat to escape. They took their chosen issues to the College’s Facilities department, who were less than receptive to their demands, according to the pair. The other group, consisting of Amanda Hemingway, Lauren Hillman, and Katrina Lindroos, also noticed a similar problem just a few feet from the concourse. They saw that the smoke pit is so near the building and allows smoke to come in through the ventilation of the concourse and creates an awful stench around the first floor. They would like to see the smoke pit moved to another location to solve the problem. The groups decided to take these issues to the Concourse to inform students about what was happening. However, the two groups have very different objectives. Grender and Hanson believe that if 3,000 students sign their petition within three weeks, some change can come from this initiative. The pair believes it will show that college community is united and change will follow because of this. Katrina Lindroos, with the smoke pit group, however, has a much more modest goal. “In reality it probably won’t do anything, this is more about promoting awareness,” explained Lindroos. Her goal is to take a first step in dealing with a much longer process. Amanda Hemingway, Lauren Hillman, and Katrina Lindroos ioe HOTT WAXX droppin the beats just for you!
