With regular scrumhalf Tia Staller away, Rikkilee Jones had to move from her regu- lar flyhalf position, but the back line was strengthened with Agnes Stefek’s return from injury. Douglas chose to go downhill to start the game, and a knock-on by Pocomo off the opening kick gave them territorial advantage. Several minutes of pressure paid dividends as Jones found space around the side of a goal-line ruck to score. Megan Griffiths made the kick from a difficult angle and Douglas had the lead. Later, Pocomo stole a ball against the head, but they could not control it as it came clear, and it was kicked upfield by one Darren Paterson, Sports Editor Finally! Finally, someone took hold of that freaking Atlantic Division. It’s not official yet, and they have been sliding, but it looks like Boston may take the cake, and with a winning record too. I was so damned close to cursing the division system that the NBA and NHL seem so fond of, but, as happened with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL, the Boston Celtics have managed to earn what they'll soon get—a playoff spot. And if they fail, then Allen Iverson looks like he’s in good enough form to earn the Sixers that spot instead. But no matter which team wins that division, I am damned happy that at least one of the teams will have an above .500 record. And, at the top of the league, it’s nice of the Douglas forwards. The Pocomo fullback scooped up the ball near her own try-line, but was immediately tackled by Douglas’s Lisa O’Neill. Stefek retrieved the ball as it came loose, and dove in for anoth- er score. Once again, Griffiths converted to make the score 14-0. In the second half, Pocomo immediate- ly came on very strong, but the Douglas defense managed to keep their opposition from scoring, holding up the ball in-goal on two occasions. With less than 15 minutes to go, strong running by Whitney Sousa and Maggie Dobbs brought Douglas into scoring range once more. Pocomo again stole the ball from a Douglas put-in at the five-metre line, but could not control it, and Douglas captain Nicole Edgson took advantage to retrieve the ball and score the third try of the match to increase the lead to 19-0. Finally, Pocomo managed to score a try on the last effort of the game to finish the scoring at 19-5 in favour of Douglas. to see something more than a one-team runaway this year, as the race to the top is an exciting three-horse battle. Shaq, Nash, and Duncan are all in fine form and their teams are neck-in-neck for the league title. And I must say, even if NHL hockey were alive today, I’d still be watching with rapt attention the exciting race that a little league parity has provided. www.theotherpress.ca | 21
