S32 Teachers ! Let'sGo ! TEACHERS TO COSTA RICA Programme objective To provide Spanish speaking teachers (elementary, secondary, college) interested in Central America with the opportunity to acquire first-hand information about this area, with emphasis on Costa Rica and its culture. This experience wil] enhance their intercultural awareness and understanding of the Costa Rican educational system through direct participation in Costa Rican family, school and community life. The host. family and school placements will also allow the hosting family and community to learn about Canada through the presence of a teacher. Teachers will be asked to give presentations on Canada to secondary school students in Spanish, Programme outline A one day orientation in Canada will be provided before departure; departure for Costa Rica the following day. AFS Costa Rica, a not-for-profit organization, in cooperation with the State Ministry of Education has developed this programme exclusively for Canadian teachers of Spanish or teachers who speak Spanish, Upan your arrival in San Jose you will have one free day to recover from jet lag and get used to your surroundings. A several day orientation will be held thereafter in San Jose with accommodations provided by Costa Rican host. families. This orientation will include a series of seminars on the history, economy, education, and political situation of Costa Rica in the Central American context. Your attendance and participation in the activities of a secondary school in San Jose and/or another rural community will allow you to meet many very hospitable Costa Ricans. At least three enrichment activities will be organized for your group from among the following: a visit. to Alajuela with its natural springs, the jungle train ride to visit coastal Limon, the canal trip up the East coast. to visit. Tortuguero and its famous sea tortoises, the famous active volcanos of Costa Rica, the magnificent. beaches on both coasts, not to mention the Monteverde Cloud Forest, a rain forest that is permanently blanketed by clouds. You will be assured of the full support of AFS Costa Rica volunteers and professional staff throughout your stay. There will be an end-of-stay orientation to’evaluate the programme, relax and do some additional sightseeing. Programme dates Applications should be received by Interculture Canada by April 30th, 1987. This seven week programme wil] begin with a pre- departure orientation in Canada on July 3rd and end with return trip to Canada on August. 22, 1987. Participation fee The participation fee of 2,500 $ includes domestic and international airfare, orientation costs, accommodations in Costa Rica and Canada, administration and travel insurance for seven weeks. Personal expenses, independent travel, and entertainment are at the cost of the participant, A 500 $ deposit will be required with the submission of an application to the programme. This amount will not be refunded in the case of withdrawal after May 30th, 1987.
