Douglas Wins Rugby Championships The Douglas Rugby Club achieved yet another milestone last Saturday by defeating Pocomo Rugby Club for the Fraser Valley first division championship title. The club did this in only its third year in the league. In 1976 Douglas won the second division penant and in 1977 in its first year in the first division finished fourth. The game on Saturday against Pocomo was a cliff-hanger all the way. After regulation time (ie.two 40 minute halves with no substitution) the score was tied at 6-6. After a further twenty minutes of overtime play the score was tied at 12-12. Finally in the second twenty minute over- time period JOEL SCHMIDT scored an excellent try for Douglas, which Pocomo couldn't match, to give Douglas the win and the Championship. Other scores for Douglas were DAVE JAGGER and BURT KIRBY with drop goals, and MARK OVENDEN with a try and a conversion. Pocomo scored all their points on field goals. A good crowd was on hand to see this televised game. Douglas now plays U.B.C. O1d Boys at Swangard Stadium on Sunday April 30th at 2:30 p.m. The winner of this game plays James Bay on the Island for the B.C. Championships. Douglas thus finished the season with 14 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties in league play including the playoff game. In the second division Douglas finished the year with the best record having won 13 games and lost only 3. } But having won neither the first or second halves of the league outright they did not qualify for the playoffs. AL HARNESS did an excellent job of leading the second team this year. The second team will undoubtedly be top contenders for the divisional title next year. In the third division Douglas finished second behind Pocomo with 7 wins and 3. losses. They concluded their schedule on Saturday with a 10-6 win over Langley. Scorers for Douglas were skipper HERBIE HAAF and rookie ROB McKERRAL with a try each, and LEN LEMIEUX with a convert. G. Van Niekerk
