NEW DIRECTIONS THROUGH EDUCATION In 1975/76 the Playhouse Theatre Centre plans to expand ite Theatre-in-education programme. The success of the past two years has pointed out the strength of educationally based ~ theatre in the schools. By continuing to enhance traditional] subject matter, theatre-in-education will become a total part of every child's learning experience. For the past two yearg, the theatre-in-education programme has been funded by the Vancouver School Board. We hope to continue their support '' . as well as extend our programming to young people throughout the Province. Through programmes directly involving stud- ents, and presentational documentary pieces, the Playhouse Theatre Centre will continue to make new inroads into edu- . cation. — WHAT IS THEATRE-IN-EDUCATION? A group of actor/teachers formulate an idea centered around the curriculum which would be relevant to young people both in their school and social situations. Through research and rehearsal periods the idea is explored and developed and then brought to students. Together in harmony or disharmony, they live out and expand the idea. Children participating in theatre-in-education programmes, are stimulated to learn traditional subject matter by means of théir direct involvement and experience. They are pro=- vided conceptual problems, which require them to evaluate . human experience, make moral decisions and articulate their thoughts and feelings. Theatre-in-Education groups are concerned that their work is not seen as an isolated experience but as an integral part of the development of the indiYidual child. Therefore, co-operation with teachers is encouraged. Pre and post activities are provided the classroom teacher as well as workshops which will enable him/her to carry forth experien=- cial learning. In preparatory stayes, actor teachers are in consultation with teachers and specialist advice is encouraged whenever necessary. By using theatre techniques, improvisation, role playing, and creative activities, Theatre-in-Education teams are able to explore a wide ranye of subject areas. Their work is, therefore, relevant throughout the curriculum both at the elementary and secondary levels, Mere Actoits thao program can be obtuined From Barry Leach | Inshh-tes' Offre , Surrey
