I have the answer to your flabby belly and pillowy butt—boxing. Boxing is rated the second best conditioning sport in the world, next to motor cross racing. For those of you who dont already know, we have boxing wondered, how can I join the boxing club? That's easy, walk in the door and say “Hi” to either Dave Wylie or Dick Findlay and they will take care of the rest. The only thing you have to do is show up two or three times a week, Dick, a former Canadian welterweight champion, says, “The boxing instruction students get from Dave and | is as good as it gets anywhere in Vancouver. Things are going to happen down here. We've got posters going Jout now and we are trying to get more people to turn out. Students don't thing; it’s just a {good workout you learn how to move around and how to throw the punches. World wide, boxing fitness has had a couple of years of Tai- kwon-do training under her belt and she convinced me that boxing would be an excellent work out. I couldn't believe how drenched in sweat I became after only a few rounds on the bag. My heart was pounding and my muscles were screaming from a long lapse in activity. After the first month I really started to notice the power of my punches improve and then I worked on speed for about two months. Dave says, “seventy per- cent of the students I train are in it for the health and fitness aspects of the sport. There is no pressure to spar or fight.” I thought I would give sparing a try just to see how practical a skill boxing can be. Dave put me in the ring with his son Robert. Before the match Robert com- mented, “Boxing is a good way to get rid of your stress and anger so you don't take it outside the gym. Everyone here respects each other.” Dave told him to take it easy on me and aim for the crest on my headgear. We touched gloves and then the fun began. I kept my hands up and did my best to think defensively, but as the match wore on it became increasingly obvious that Robert's reach combined with my clumsi- ness made me-an easy target (I thought trading jabs meant that we both got to throw and receive the jabs. I seemed to be only receiving jabs), I felt like I was throwing my punches in slow motion. What draws people to boxing? Some say they like boxing because they learn how to protect themselves, others say they like boxing because it’s easy to fit into their schedule. But, the answer I like the best is, “ It’s an honest workout. You get out of it what you put into it.” We all go a little crazy around exam time and need something to destress on. I put my stress into the bag and in return what I get out of it is a relaxed and confident frame of mind to get back to the books with.
