It’s a complex question but the key one now facing all post-secondary institutions, says new Douglas College President Susan Hunter- Harvey. The president talks about a “community of learners’ that includes both students and employees. Looking ahead to major issues facing her office and the College, she discussed the mutual goals of improving responsiveness to community needs and enhancing employees’ capacity to accommodate them. “Presidents and institutions must become much more sensitive to the needs of learners. In the broader community there is a perception that there is too little attention paid to learning outcomes and that must be addressed,” says Hunter-Harvey, who begins her duties on September 15. “The president must play a crucial external role in terms of forging partnerships, by going out and continued on page 7 Capital Campaign kickoff 7 THE DOUGLAS COLLEGE NEWSLETTER | SEPTEMBER 1995 COLLEGE REORGANIZATION Office names changing Names of many Douglas College offices and position titles will be changing this fall as the structural reorganization process continues. Office and department names have been changed to more accurately describe their function. Job titles have been changed to create greater uniformity throughout the College. For example, heads of non-instructional departments who report directly to vice-presidents are directors. Heads of the instructional units are deans.
