INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE/NOVEMBER 8, 1988 Athletic Update Men’s Basketball: The men travelled to Montreal Oct. 26 - 31 to compete in the Dawson College tournament. Douglas placed fifth overall and Glen Cote was named a Ist All-Star. The tourney was won by Hum- ber Hawks from Toronto over Vanier of Montreal (85 - 84). Douglas College vs. Grant MacEwan (Edmonton) - (94 - 71) Sean Beasley - 20 points Glen Cote - 15 points Phil Tapley - 12 points Women’s Basketball: The Douglas College Women’s Bas- ketball team travelled to Calgary to participate in the All-Alberta Pre-Season Tourney hosted by S.A.LT. Seventh seed Douglas came up against Second ranked Red Deer in the first round and were leading by eight points late in the first half when Douglas’ third year player and top rebounder Andrea Jackson in- jured her ankle. The much bigger Red Deer team slowly took control in the second half and broke it open in the last few minutes to win 73-58. Three hours later Douglas came up against Grant MacEwan of Ed- monton. Douglas managed to stay ahead by a couple of points throughout the game by pressing full court. Final score Douglas College 70, Grant MacEwan 61. First game of the next day saw a tired Douglas face an almost as tired Grande Prairie team. Both teams gave it a good effort but néither found much luck shoot- ing. Although Douglas shot 31% to Grande Prairie’s 28%, Grande Prairie made the best of their foul shots while Douglas hit only 5 in 18 tries, and were defeated 50-43. Lethbridge, led by B.C.’s 6’6" Laurie Hock- ridge won the Championship with Red Deer finishing second. Douglas finished seventh. Ethel Atte led all Douglas scorers each of the three games. Women’s Volleyball: The results of the BCCAA tourna- ment #1 in Castlegar at Selkirk College October 28 and 29 are as follows: 1. Douglas vs. Capilano (14-16, 15-6, 13-15) 2. Douglas vs. CBC (15-12,15-8) 3. Douglas vs. VCC (11-15, 5- 15) 4. Douglas vs. Selkirk (10- 15, 15-7, 15-10) Men’s Volleyball: Douglas men played in Castlegar at the BCCAA Tournament #1 with the following results: 1. Douglas vs. Cariboo (15-3, 15-8) 2. Douglas vs. Malaspina (15-7, 15-11) This was the best match of the 3 played during the day. Dean Witter played well with a total of 11 kills. 3. Douglas vs. VCC (9-15, 4- 15) Men’s Hockey: The Royals played two league games this weekend, winning both and keeping penalties at a minimum, which must be a first. Oct. 28 -Douglas vs. BCIT(5-4).
