TO: DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD December 16, 1982. rte On November 30th, a meeting was held sponsored by New Westminster School District, which I attended on behalf of the College. The © meeting involved a discussion of future directions in co-operative education and training at the secondary school level. _ On December 10, the Lower Mainland Co-operative Planning Group met, in order to discuss further directions, once the data on the lower mainland community college and institute programs has been assembled — in January. The basis for the discussion was a report submitted by myself and Mr. Tony Wilkinson of Kwantlen College. It was obvious that our work was going to interlock closely with the provincially developed guideline for 5-Year Plans which has been promulgated recently. In the afternoon of that day, I participated in a meet- ing with Dr. Grant Fisher and his staff regarding the 5-Year Plan- ning process. The provincial requirements will involve some addi- tional information, and some reprocessing of existing information, that will be Mr. Redmond's responsibility to assemble over the next few months. I C. Internal Matters - Education Development On December 2nd, Ms. Joy Leach, of Malaspina College led a series of several workshops relating to the involvement of the College in community projects and activities, that result in additional resources being made available - thus extending the influence and value of the College. Ms. Leach emphasized that while such activities in the long run tended to generate funds that could benefit the College, they did not result in activities that directly subsidized the activities for which colleges are funded by the Ministry of Education. However they greatly enhanced and enriched the nature of college __ activities and the involvement of college personnel in community activities. A more detailed report will be made by Mr. Emerton in a separate part of this meeting. Mr. Jim Doerr, Dean of Community Programs and Services and I will be reporting at a subsequent meeting of the Board regarding a proposed set of policy guidelines and plans of action in this area. D. Internal Matters - Labour Relations © I have held discussions with the President of the Faculty Association regarding the Association's concerns with the behaviour of the College administration. The thrust of the Association's concerns are that relationships with the Association should be viewed more seriously by the College administration, and that there should be a clarifying and codifying of the basis upon which communications occur between the | College and individual faculty members. a wate
