LOCAL INITIATIVES PROGRAM The special needs of many Surrey residents could be met by projects fund-\§ ed by the Local Initiatives Program. "with the September 10 deadline approaching," said Bill Adams, manager of the Surrey office of Canada Manpower, § "we are urging the community to bring forth their ideas and applications for LIP. Any individual, group, or municip-} ality can sponsor a LIP project." "The projects," said Adams, "must provide a worthwhile service to the community and have the support of that community. Projects which would dupli- cate existing facilities and services, however, will not be considered." ‘ LIP is a program to provide jobs at§ the time of highest unemployment. "Though we do not yet know what allocation we will receive for our area/¥ said Adams, "we do know that LIP can contribute up to $100,000 per project. The average federal contribution to wage for the projects will not exceed. $140 per man week. (A man week = 1 person working 1 week).
