TO: MAD HATTER 9 DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD October 16, 1986. oe ghee The work of Maple Ridge School District, including the Acting District Superintendent and Senior Secondary School Principal; Mr. Larry Davies, the administrator responsible for College and School District Adult Education operations in Maple Ridge; Mr. Jim Doerr; and Mr. Bill Morfey; have all made major contributions in this area. At a time of growing financial stringency within the College, such developments which promise to relieve present and future burdens on the College budget, are most welcome. On October 1, a major community/regional art display was opened in Douglas College, by Mayor Tom Baker of New Westminster. The art display relates to the Fraser River as a theme, and involves artists throughout the province. The displays are on location in New Westminster on three sites - the Public Library; the Queens Park Arts Centre; and here at Douglas College. The quality of the work shown is impressive. Two meetings were held during the month, relating to the organization and development of the Douglas College Foundation. Further commentary will be made on this matter in due course. On October 8, Dr. Bert Wales met with the senior administration of the College, to discuss the implications of the self-study findings. On October 8, the same day, the first meeting of the new College Education Committee occurred, signalling the commencement of Operations of our revised governance model. On October 9, the Fall Graduation occurred. This Graduation was marked by the uniquely stirring presentation by the Class Valedictorian, Marilyn Thom. On October 15th, a special meeting was held with the Deans and the Bursar on Excellence in Education funding, which will have a major effect on our circumstances during this next year, if we understand correctly the intentions of government. Our proposals against this fund will be made in a timely fashion, and will as usual be subject to review, comment, and endorsation as required by both the College Education Committee and the College Board. As is usual in such cases, when dealing with government requests for submissions against "soft" monies, we have no choice but to make submissions, subject to approval after the fact because of the time deadlines involved. In this case, the Excellence in Education proposals are to be submitted against next year's budget so there is plenty of time for review and adjustment as required.
