The Royal City Cafe: Cheap Eats on Columbia Street

Wie more Canadian than a
Chinese: restaurant? The Royal City
Cafe (634. Columbia St.) is the kind I’m
talking. about—a homey - hole-in-the-
wall. with maroon leather booths leftover
from the 1950s, and plastic flowers on
the table. It dishes up standard fares: like
beef and broccoli, almond chicken, and
honey garlic prawns. Local, organic,
haute cuisine it ain’t, but the quantity
and relative quality of the food make this
place worth visiting. For about the price
of a designer latte, you can get a tasty,
satisfying meal for two.

The spring: rolls’ are plump,
hot, greasy, and, filled with’ assorted
matchsticks of vegetables made fragrant
with five-spice. The barbeque pork chop
suey includes a' generous assortment of
vegetables, cooked so they are tender but
still.crisp. Their shrimp chow mein is a

mountainous serving of noodles, full of

vegetable shreds and seafood. The menu
includes ten vegetarian dishes, and I dare
you to try the deep-fried potato chop
suey.

Along with lunch and dinner,

the Royal City Cafe also does breakfast.
Prices start at’ $2.75; that wouldn’t get
you a piece of someone else’s leftover
toast in my neighbourhood! Here, less
than $5 will get you coffee and enough

 

average trucker. Serv

minimal, the way it should be in a diner.
You get your coffee refilled, and that’s

about it.
