Education Leave Report (1994/95) summary Faculty who take education leave are required by College policy to publish a brief summary of their activities in INside. Watch for further summaries. Developmental Studies Instructor Joyce Cameron What I hoped to accomplish during my educational leave was to find an answer to my question, “Why is it so painfully difficult for some adults to learn to read?” Specifically, I undertook to examine the phonological awareness of adult illiterate and semi-literate students. My concern was to find out if the ability to recognize the separate sounds, rather than just hearing the word as a single entity, related to reading levels and strategies, and progress in learning to read. The study involved literacy students at Douglas College and Vancouver Community College’s King Edward Campus. The results of the study strongly suggest that there is a relation between phonological awareness and progress in reading. Lack of phonological awareness appears to limit students’ strategies for figuring out new words and thus hinders their becoming independent readers. In the process of reading other people’s research and conducting my own, I gained a sense of what type of programme would be necessary to implement phonological awareness training with adults. At present, I am attempting to incorporate such a programme into the work that I do with a group of Douglas College literacy students. For more information, contact Joyce Cameron at 527-5416.
